A Cameroon-flagged car carrier called “Lider Bulut” was grounded in the Black Sea, off Tuapse, Russia, after having developed heavy starboard list because of a hull breach.

Due to the hull breach, flooding took place in the ship’s engine room, with Russian media claiming that during an inspection, several holes were discovered in the ship’s hull.

What is more, the vessel was intentionally grounded to avoid capsizing, but the cause of the accident is still unknown.

After the grounding, the car carrier’s crew requested help from Tuapse port, as the ship had tilted more than 10 degrees. The Russian authorities deployed rescue vessels to secure the area, while no oil spills or casualties were reported, and all 28 crew are safe.

Now, information reports that the ship experienced a malfunction in its ballast system, and that work is underway to repair and stabilise the vessel, in order to be towed to Tuapse port.
