Recently, Chinese Ambassador to the UK and Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization Zheng Zeguang, and Vice Minister of Transport Li Yang, who led a delegation to the UK to attend the 34th session of the International Maritime Organization Assembly, jointly hosted a reception at the Chinese Embassy in the UK. They introduced China’s achievements in the development of the shipping industry and its results in participating in global maritime governance cooperation, and held the unveiling ceremony for the Office of the Permanent Representative of China to the International Maritime Organization. Nearly 300 people attended, including International Maritime Organization Secretary-General Domingos, heads of delegations from many countries participating in the IMO Assembly, diplomatic envoys to the UK, and other individuals from various sectors.
In his speech, Zheng Zeguang congratulated the opening of the 34th session of the IMO Assembly and thanked Domingos, the IMO Secretariat, and representatives of member states for their support and cooperation provided to China. He pointed out that during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s economic strength, scientific and technological capabilities, and comprehensive national power have reached new levels. Next year, China will commence the “15th Five-Year Plan”. We adhere to advancing Chinese modernization through high-quality development, persist in developing new quality productive forces according to local conditions, and unswervingly promote high-level opening up, which will continue to inject stability and positive energy into the world. Shipping is an important link connecting China with the world. China firmly upholds the international system with the United Nations at its core and practices true multilateralism. The establishment of China’s Permanent Representative Office once again demonstrates the importance and support China places on the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. China is willing to further deepen exchanges, coordination, and cooperation with the Secretariat and member states to jointly make new contributions to promoting global maritime governance cooperation and maintaining the security and smooth flow of global industrial and supply chains.

In his speech, Li Yang emphasized that the Chinese government will earnestly fulfill its obligations under international conventions, actively demonstrate the responsibility of a major country, take the establishment of the Permanent Representative Office as an opportunity to continuously deepen cooperation with International Maritime Organization member states, strive to build a modern shipping system, and make greater contributions to world economic growth and the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

Guests including Domingos congratulated China on the establishment of its Permanent Representative Office and highly praised the outstanding achievements of China’s shipping industry and its important contributions to international maritime cooperation.
