The China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry released the latest data. During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, the three major indicators of China’s shipbuilding industry rapidly improved, continuing to lead the world.

As of the end of June 2025, during the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s shipbuilding industry secured 64.2% of global new ship orders, which is 15.1 percentage points higher than during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period. The status as a major shipbuilding country was further consolidated, with its market share ranking first in the world for 16 consecutive years.

Among these, the shipbuilding completion volume accounted for 51.7% of the world’s total. Measured by compensated gross tonnage, which reflects ship prices and output value, it accounted for 47.2% of the world’s total, representing increases of 8.6 and 11 percentage points respectively compared to the end of the “13th Five-Year Plan” period.

Li Yanqing, Secretary-General of the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, stated: “A distinct feature of these five years is the significant progress we have made in intelligent and high-end products. We have a series of green products that are the first of their kind globally.”

During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, China’s shipbuilding industry delivered a number of high-end ship types, including the 300,000-ton VLCC, dual-fuel powered Ro-Ro ships, and the first domestically built large cruise ship, the “Adora Magic City”. Currently, at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, the construction progress of the second domestically built large cruise ship has reached 85%.

Chen Gang, Chairman of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, introduced that the second domestically built large cruise ship will commence sea trials in May 2026 and is scheduled for delivery in December 2026.

With both quantity and quality rising in China’s shipbuilding industry, the benefits for shipbuilding enterprises have also significantly improved. As of June 2025, the revenue profit margin of large-scale shipbuilding industrial enterprises nationwide reached 9.71%, a record high.
