ClassNK added the world’s first notation, a-EA (CFP), as a new framework to make visible initiatives related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during ship construction, indicating that the carbon footprint (CFP) generated during the ship’s construction has been calculated and subjected to third-party verification.

Shipyards, owners, and shipping companies can externally demonstrate the environmental value of their vessels as environmentally friendly ships. This certification is stipulated in the Environmental Guidelines (Edition 4.2) published by ClassNK.

Given the growing interest of companies in decarbonization, initiatives to measure and disclose these emissions throughout the entire supply chain, including Scope 3, are expanding.

In the shipping sector, GHGs related to the construction of owned vessels are classified as Scope 3 Category 2 (capital goods), underscoring the importance of properly assessing and disclosing this information during shipbuilding.

However, it is not always easy to obtain detailed data on construction processes and materials used to determine emissions during shipbuilding, which are often calculated using factors or default values that may not fully reflect initiatives such as the use of low-carbon materials or their reduction in the construction process.

In this context, ClassNK has revised its “Environmental Guidelines,” which prescribe notations for various environmental initiatives, and has added this notation, which indicates that the CFP during ship construction has been calculated and is subject to third-party verification.
