A classification society has introduced a marketplace for using and sharing 3D models and ship designs for building digital twins and refining shipbuilding projects

ClassNK has introduced a cocreation digital marketplace for stakeholders in the maritime industry to use naval architecture and 3D models for ships, and to facilitate project collaboration.

It enables shipyards and engineering companies to find suitable design software and vendors to undertake their shipbuilding, architectural and operational projects.

ClassNK said it “enables a wide range of stakeholders seeking design data or services to search for and compare relevant information according to their specific needs.”

It encourages use of 3D models and resources of design data not fully utilised by the industry and promotes data sharing among stakeholders.

The classification society said 3D models and design data is often under utilised beyond its initial purpose in the maritime industry leading to missed engineering opportunities.

Ship design data could be used to build digital twins for use across the vessel lifecycle to facilitate improvements in operational efficiency, maintenance and safety.

Members of the marketplace can register their service information and model data in the supporting library while complying with the terms of use that govern management and handling of design data.

“Members can also refer to models and services offered by other participants and consider their use,” said ClassNK.

“By clearly defining responsibilities and permissible use of design data, the marketplace establishes an environment in which members can securely share information and advance comparative studies and collaboration on new technologies and services.”

This initiative was carried out as part of the Digital Twin Project, in which shipyards, shipowners, software providers, and classification societies collaborate to examine a secure framework for sharing design and operational information.
