Shanggang Energy will provide biomass methanol fuel bunkering services for CMA CGM Group’s methanol-powered vessels simultaneously during their cargo loading and unloading operations at Shanghai Port.

On September 18, CMA CGM Group and Shanggang Energy signed the “Biomass Methanol Bunkering Service Contract” in Shanghai.

This cooperation is a brand-new milestone, marking that the strategic cooperation to build a complete biomass methanol industrial chain has entered the implementation phase; the initial cooperation period will last until 2030. Simultaneously, this cooperation also injects strong green momentum into the international shipping industry’s energy transition and low-carbon development.

According to reports, this signing is a major measure to implement the long-term biomass methanol supply cooperation framework agreement jointly signed by CMA CGM Group, Shanggang Energy, and Shanghai Electric on March 20 this year. According to the agreement, Shanghai Electric Group will provide medium to long-term biomass methanol fuel supply for CMA CGM Group. Through the cooperation with Shanghai International Port Group, biomass methanol will be transported from the Taonan production base in Jilin to Shanghai Port, where it will subsequently be bunkered for CMA CGM Group’s vessels.

It is noteworthy that Shanghai Electric’s biomass methanol project in Taonan, Jilin, officially commenced production on July 15, successfully producing the world’s first batch of green methanol synthesized from wind-powered green hydrogen coupled with biomass gasification.

According to the contract, Shanggang Energy will establish an efficient storage and transportation system from northern Chinese ports to Shanghai Port, providing simultaneous biomass methanol fuel bunkering services for CMA CGM Group’s methanol-powered vessels during their cargo handling calls at Shanghai Port.

CMA CGM Group stated that as a leading enterprise in the global shipping and logistics sector, it consistently leads the industry’s green transformation process. This cooperation will provide crucial support for achieving its strategic goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

This cooperation model will not only accelerate CMA CGM Group’s decarbonization process but also provides a practical and feasible implementation path for building a green transformation ecosystem in the global shipping industry, further consolidating Shanghai Port’s status as a global shipping hub.
