The launching ceremony for the cable layer Sophie Germain
Colombo Dockyard recently launched the cable laying and repair vessel, Sophie Germain, for Orange Marine France. The ceremony for the 100m long specialist vessel took place on November 3rd at Dock No 2. The basic design was developed by Vard Design of Norway to provide a highly eco-friendly vessel, and the vessel was built to Bureau Veritas (BV) classification society standards.
Due for delivery early in 2023, this is the first cable layer that Colombo Dockyard has delivered to a European customer, having earlier delivered a vessel of this type to a Japanese owner in 2019. Addressing guests to mark the occasion, CDPLC Chairman Hideaki Tanaka said, “Colombo Dockyard will never give up under lot of difficulties faced by Sri Lanka and we will continue to be a leader of cable layer vessels in international market.”
