LA SPEZIA – Contship announces a new step in the decarbonization path of its port activities with the introduction at La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) of the first full-electric port tractor in quayside operations.
The initiative represents a further development of the technological innovation plan launched at the Spezia terminal and is consistent with the Group’s sustainability strategy.

The new vehicle will be used by Hannibal for internal shuttle activities at the LSCT terminal and will constitute the first pilot project dedicated to the progressive electrification of the quay tractor fleet. The objective is to contribute to the reduction of direct emissions (Scope 1) generated by port operations.

The use of electric tractors in port terminals indeed offers several operational advantages: the vehicles work in proximity to charging stations and the frequent stop-and-go phases allow for optimal use of regenerative braking. The new zero-emission model also allows for optimizing consumption during container handling maneuvers, while guaranteeing lower noise and reduced vibrations. Elements that improve comfort and safety for operators, with positive effects also on the efficiency of daily activities.

The investment was co-financed through the “Green Ports PNRR” project, thanks to a tender promoted and managed by the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority. The initiative is part of the “Green Ports: renewable energy and energy efficiency interventions in ports” program, supported by the European Union with Next Generation EU resources and aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and improving air quality in port cities.

“The energy transition program we have implemented aims to decarbonize port activities,” commented Simone Pacciardi, Head of the EU Relations, Community Project Management and PNRR Funds Service of the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority. “The Authority, in particular, has made its know-how available to terminal operators, regarding the management of PNRR funding, thus allowing them to exploit the opportunities offered by the Green Ports initiative for the benefit of the port system.”

“The introduction of the electric tractor represents a concrete piece of the Group’s sustainability strategy,” added Denise Sofia, Head of ESG at Contship. “In 2025 we launched the ambitious ‘Moves that Matter’ strategy, defining clear and measurable objectives, including the decarbonization of the Group’s activities in alignment with SBTi standards. This project demonstrates how innovation and sustainability, combined with public-private collaboration, can generate initiatives capable of creating value in the medium term.”

The initiative is part of a broader technological innovation program developed by Contship at the La Spezia terminal, which includes the digitalization of processes, new infrastructural investments and the enhancement of equipment with the aim of increasing operational efficiency along the entire port activity chain.
