Konecranes’ Director Port Technology, Dr. Hannu Oja, revealed a new concept for STS cranes at Port Technology’s Container Terminal Automation Conference (#CTAC2018) on March 14, 2018.

The plans for the crane, equipped with a boom that can reach across the entire width of the ship, allows for container pick-up, transfer and drop-down by a trolley that travels along the boom and a fixed bridge girder.

Dr. Oja explained to the audience how the crane could travel along the quay on rails to position itself as needed with each line of containers on the ship deck or below, or that it could also move from one ship to another.

While travelling, if the crane came across obstacles in the ship superstructure, an operator could raise the boom to a semi-vertical position.

Dr. Oja added that the trolley could also be equipped with an onboard hoisting and travelling mechanism.
