Recently, the loud whistle echoed at Dalian COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s dock as the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier “NAVIGATOR CENTAURI” set sail after successfully completing its in-depth special survey and dry-dock repairs. The vessel’s successful repair marks a major breakthrough for Dalian COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry in the high-end gas carrier repair sector, with its technical capabilities earning high recognition from the internationally renowned shipowner, Denmark’s NAVIGATOR GAS LLC, and management company NORTHERN MARINE.
After the project commenced, the company’s repair departments collaborated closely, conducting multiple rounds of in-depth discussions on the project specifications. To meet the stringent requirements for repairing core precision components, Dalian COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry established and put into operation a temperature-controlled, dust-free repair workshop for the first time. This key facility played a decisive role in securing the project and passing the rigorous evaluation by the European shipowner.
Safety management was central to this repair project. Upon the vessel’s arrival, the responsible leadership convened a kickoff meeting, where the project team conducted safety inspections, categorized equipment functions, and carried out safety briefings. That same night, ventilation and gas replacement for the cargo tanks commenced, with remote monitoring devices installed to track gas concentrations in real time. Hot work approvals were upgraded to include management-level risk assessments, while daily morning meetings identified potential hazards. These measures ensured zero safety violations, zero accidents, and zero complaints throughout the project.
Piping and mechanical repairs were key focuses, with the temperature-controlled, dust-free workshop playing a pivotal role. Critical equipment such as deep-well pumps and safety valves underwent precision repairs in the dust-free environment, with the engine shop assigning dedicated personnel to oversee environmental conditions, progress, and quality—earning praise from the shipowner and service providers. Faced with challenges such as high-pressure nitrogen testing and lengthy pipelines in the deck cargo system, the workshop independently designed and fabricated specialized nitrogen cylinder manifolds and other tools, ensuring safety and efficiency while completing pressure tests with precision.
Given the LPG carrier’s stringent explosion-proof requirements for deck areas, the electrical workshop undertook the replacement and repair of over 120 explosion-proof electrical devices, deploying qualified personnel and equipment in advance. From the disassembly and testing of large explosion-proof motors to the meticulous handling of tiny wiring connections, all work strictly adhered to explosion-proof standards. All electrical work was completed ahead of schedule and passed the shipowner’s inspection in a single attempt.
The painting team innovatively applied air-assisted spraying technology, achieving uniform coating while reducing paint consumption and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions—delivering both environmental and quality benefits. For the last-minute addition of cargo pump motor lifting beam work, the project team responded swiftly, formulating an on-site solution and completing the design, fabrication, and installation before departure.
The project’s efficient execution and outstanding quality drew praise from the shipowner’s management team. British superintendent Mr. Martin remarked, “From risk control to explosion-proof craftsmanship, everything meets the standards of Europe’s top shipyards.” Superintendent Mr. Seumas added upon departure, “Your company has demonstrated not only technical excellence but also an unwavering commitment to vessel safety!”
