Damen Shipyards Group announced a strategic alliance with AAAPropulsion, which will allow the application of the A-Pod solution to its electric tugs.

AAAPropulsion, based in Boven-Leeuwen, The Netherlands, specializes in the production of electric maritime propulsion systems. The patented A-Pod is a 360° azimuth propulsion system with an integrated electric motor installed in the lower POD housing and cooled by the external water.

The A-Pod, installed under the hull, reduces resistance and increases efficiency. Its lower center of gravity also improves the vessel’s stability.

Following the integration of the system into its electric tugs and workboats, Damen aims to expand its use to other market segments. The A-Pod is suitable for various applications, and is available with a planetary gearbox (PG), direct drive (DD), and the A-Pod CRP with counter-rotating propellers.

Jean-Pierre van Lankveld, Damen’s propulsion category director, stated that “we aspire to become the world’s most sustainable and connected shipbuilder and provider of maritime solutions. One way to achieve this is through collaboration with partners like AAAPropulsion, who share our commitment to a cleaner and more efficient maritime future.”

“We are very excited to form this alliance with Damen. There is a clear synergy between our two organizations, especially regarding our shared vision of innovation and sustainability. We are thrilled to collaborate with Damen. By combining our strengths, we will explore the existing potential to drive vessel efficiency,” concluded Dick-Jan de Blaeij, chief executive officer of AAAProplusion.
