Tokyo – The Japanese company “K” Line has taken delivery of a new car carrier with a capacity of 6,900 vehicles, primarily powered by liquefied natural gas. Construction was completed by the Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding shipyard. During the delivery ceremony, the ship was officially christened “Tethys Highway,” named after the sea goddess of Greek mythology. Thanks to the use of LNG as its primary fuel, the ship can reduce COâ‚‚ emissions by 25-30% and nearly eliminate sulfur oxide emissions, responsible for air pollution, compared to units powered by traditional heavy fuel. The adoption of alternative fuels is part of the “K” Line Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future environmental strategy, in which the shipowner has set an interim 2030 target of a 50% improvement in COâ‚‚ emission efficiency compared to 2008, exceeding the IMO target set at 40%.
