A 62-meter landing craft, MS Sørøysund, grounded off Fjelldal in Tjeldsund on Saturday, prompting an emergency pollution response after an estimated 4,000 liters of diesel escaped into the water, according to local authorities cited by regional media.
Pump-over operations continued through Sunday to stabilize the vessel before another refloating attempt. The grounding occurred during an initial salvage effort overnight, when a leak was detected in one fuel tank and work was stopped pending the transfer of fuel to portable containers. By Sunday evening, responders were transferring the remaining diesel—about 27,000 liters—into 1,000-liter tanks to minimize risk before trying again to free the ship.
Fire-and-rescue officials for Evenes & Tjeldsund said containment booms had been deployed and nearby harbors were being checked for shoreline impact.
