Global shipowners are decisive factors in the success of this industry, investing in technologies and infrastructure that ensure the development and competitiveness of their businesses.

In Greece, the shipping tradition remains vibrant, with personalities such as Dr. Nikolaos Tsakos highlighting the country as a leader in the sector. Founder and leader of Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN), Mr. Tsakos combines the heritage of Chios with his strategic foresight, making TEN an international leader in energy shipping, with a state-of-the-art fleet.

Dr. Nikolaos Tsakos, a product of the shipping tradition of Chios, is one of the most emblematic personalities of the global shipping community.

Founder, Chairman and CEO of Tsakos Energy Navigation (TEN), Dr. Nikolaos Tsakos has combined maritime heritage with academic training and business acumen, leading a Group of international displacement on a top development course.

Born in 1963 in Athens, he early on followed in the family’s footsteps. Shipping was his natural destination, and as early as 1981 he began his career at sea. He served for two years as a seaman, acquiring practical knowledge that would form the basis for his subsequent moves.

From 1982 to 1985 he served as Shipping Director of Tsakos Shipping & Trading in the USA, focusing on the offshore energy production sector.

Dr. Nikolaos Tsakos was not content with experience alone. He studied Economics and Political Science at Columbia University and continued with postgraduate studies at the City University Business School in London, where he also wrote a dissertation on the connection between shipping and stock markets – work considered pioneering for its time. This dissertation was to be put into practice with the founding of TEN, which was initially listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 1993 and later, in 2002, on the New York Stock Exchange, being the first Greek company listed on the NYSE.

Under his leadership, TEN evolved impressively. From an initial fleet of four vessels, it now has 88 tankers with a total value of 5 billion dollars. The company has generated total profits of 3.7 billion dollars and has distributed dividends of over 1 billion dollars, without any interruption. With clients being major energy and oil companies, its vessels operate on all continents, safely transporting crude oil, refined products and LNG.

Dr. Nikolaos Tsakos is also distinguished for his contribution to international shipping policy. He served as Chairman of INTERTANKO (2014-2018), the international association of tanker owners, as well as Chairman of HELMEPA (2002-2006). Since 2022, he has been Vice Chairman of the Hellenic Committee for Maritime Cooperation and remains a member of dozens of shipping and regulatory organizations worldwide.

At the same time, he maintains an intense social and philanthropic activity. Together with his father, they founded the “Maria Tsakou” Foundation, dedicated to the memory of his sister who was lost prematurely. The Foundation supports young people with an interest in maritime studies, offering scholarships and promoting maritime education.

His social footprint is distinct and multidimensional, focusing on education, culture, and the empowerment of vulnerable social groups.

Dr. Nikolas Tsakos is not merely a successful entrepreneur; he is a man with a deep awareness of maritime responsibility, with an open spirit and a high sense of contribution. Those who know him speak of a low-key leader, who pursues his vision without arrogance, while serving the principles of sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility.

Today, his journey is not only a source of pride for Greek shipping but also a model of a modern leader with international influence and timeless impact.

Dr. Nikolaos Tsakos is married to the internationally renowned fashion designer Celia Kritharioti and they have three adult children.

“Like all people of the sea and of living abroad, we harbor great love and nostalgia for our homeland. However, we are not dependent on it.

The oceans open up vast horizons for international healthy competition. I am proud that Greek shipping maintains its leading position and plays a protagonistic role in the global economy. None of this would be possible without the Greek sailors who keep the flag flying high in all the world’s ports… My vision is for the Blue and White to wave on every Greek-owned ship.
