The Port Authority of Santos (APS) concluded a dredging campaign in the Organized Port of Santos in early September. The service lasted about two months and consisted of the removal of sediments and maintenance of the expected depth in the navigation channel, from the Alemoa region to the Barra, at Ponta da Praia. The service also included docking berths.

After the dredging, APS carried out a bathymetric survey, which confirmed the depths – the navigation channel, for example, remains at approximately 15 meters, allowing access for large vessels.

Thanks to the dredging campaigns, the Port of Santos has been maintaining its operational draft and navigation safety. The port complex is situated in an estuary that receives a significant volume of sediments, which can cause siltation and reduce the established design depths, mainly due to rainfall and high-intensity oceanographic events.

The actions are not only aimed at the present but especially at the future of the Port of Santos, as explained by the president of APS, Anderson Pomini: “maintaining the current draft is essential, but we are already proceeding with the channel deepening, something that has not been done for over ten years, meeting a market need, which is the deepening of the Port of Santos navigation channel.”

The work began with the rock blasting in the estuary: “We are paving a safe way to reach 16 and, subsequently, 17 meters in depth, which will bring definitive peace of mind for us to receive, at any time of day or night, the largest ships in the world,” says Pomini.
