Sao Paulo, 13 October (Argus) — Producers of synthetic fuels derived from hydrogen are calling on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to approve a greenhouse gas (GHG) pricing mechanism and give their so-called e-fuels favorable treatment.

In a statement issued before the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee meeting in London from 14–17 October, the collection of 26 e-fuels producers said IMO should approve a GHG pricing scheme for marine fuels.

The group, which includes companies such as Moeve, Green North Energy, and European Energy, also said their products should be given greater weight in meeting renewable standards because of their zero- or near-zero-emissions footprints.

Such mechanisms, where e-fuels are given a multiplier of two toward compliance, have been used temporarily in the past to accelerate demand for renewables in new markets to help reduce first-mover risks and attract investment.
