With the agreement, Elomatic is responsible for design support during the construction phase and ensures, for its part, that the Polar icebreaker is optimized for Vancouver shipyard’s processes and meets the Canadian Coast Guard’s stringent Arctic operational requirements.
The Polar icebreaker is being built entirely in Canada as part of the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) program. The vessel will be approximately 158 meters long and 28 meters wide, with a total power of over 40 MW. Additionally, it will be equipped with specialized laboratories, a moon pool, a helicopter deck and hangar, and capabilities for remotely piloted aircraft systems. Upon completion, the vessel will be one of the world’s most powerful and capable Polar Class 2 icebreakers, enabling year-round operation in the Arctic region.
Elomatic has significantly expanded its Vancouver office to meet the needs of the Polar project. The local team has been strengthened both by recruiting Canadian expertise and by transferring experienced specialists from Europe for long-term assignments in Canada. This ensures the project is supported by both local knowledge and global top-tier expertise.
“Elomatic’s expertise in the marine and offshore industry, along with their experience in designing heavy icebreakers, makes them an invaluable partner as we move into the construction phase of this significant project. Together, we will deliver a vessel that will serve Canada’s Arctic communities, reinforce sovereignty, and advance scientific research for generations to come,” commented Kate Morton, Vice President of Supply Chain Management at Seaspan Shipyards.
“We are proud to support Seaspan and the Canadian Coast Guard in this historic project. The construction contract is the final stage of the project, and it is great to see how our long-term design work is now becoming a reality. In the spirit of the ICE Pact agreement, we are advancing our expertise and strengthening Canada’s shipbuilding knowledge. We will continue our collaboration with Seaspan both in Canada and internationally,” adds Rami Hirsimäki, Director of Marine Business at Elomatic.
