“Salute to you, the most beloved people! This protection spanning over 650 nautical miles is our motherland’s most solid care for us.” On the afternoon of October 11th local time, the Baotou ship of the 47th Chinese naval escort task force provided medical assistance to the Fujian-registered merchant ship “Xin Yong Chang 27”, enabling timely and effective treatment for an injured crew member on board.
On the evening of the 9th, our escort task force received a request from the China Shipowners’ Association. A crew member on the merchant ship “Xin Yong Chang 27”, sailing in the Indian Ocean, had been accidentally scalded and urgently needed medical assistance. The task force command immediately confirmed the injured person’s condition via satellite phone and convened medical personnel to discuss and formulate a rescue plan.
“Providing escort for the people is our responsibility and mission.” The Baotou ship maneuvered at high speed towards the merchant ship. Simultaneously, the task force command activated emergency procedures, made all necessary preparations, and reported the medical assistance action plan while underway.
The navigation department plotted the situation chart, identifying the merchant ship’s position, rendezvous time, and coordinates; the watch department maintained constant contact with the merchant ship, regularly updating the casualty’s condition; the medical team prepared relevant medical equipment and medicines, and consulted with experts from Changhai Hospital of the Naval Medical University and the support base in Djibouti on the injury treatment plan…
“Prepare to launch the boat from the starboard side, relevant personnel stand by.” At 2 PM on the 11th, the Baotou ship and the merchant vessel reached the rendezvous point, and the medical assistance operation commenced immediately. Following a remote consultation with experts from Changhai Hospital, the medical team performed anti-infection treatments for the injured crew member, including wound debridement, bandaging, and intravenous infusion. To create better conditions and buy time for his shore-based treatment, the task force also left sufficient medication and instructed the ship on subsequent treatment and care.
Captain Bai Chuanya of the “Xin Yong Chang 27” said to the officers and soldiers: “Thank you very much. Your arrival makes us feel very reassured.”
Such emergency assistance is not unfamiliar to Medical Assistant Zhao Xiangyu. Last month, the task force provided emergency treatment for a crew member from a cargo ship who suffered a sudden onset of cholecystitis. “Performing duties with the 47th escort task force, I deeply feel the weight of responsibility,” Zhao Xiangyu said. Providing timely and effective treatment under limited medical conditions to stabilize a compatriot’s condition is the inherent duty of the “People’s Navy serving the people.”
As the medical assistance personnel returned to the Baotou ship, the crew members gathered on the deck, waving to the escort officers and soldiers. That evening, the “Xin Yong Chang 27” sent another message to the task force: “We are extremely grateful to the People’s Navy for extending a helping hand to us on the vast ocean!”
