The Fjellstrand shipyard will convert for Geiranger Fjordservice its passenger ship Geirangerfjord II, which will become a fully electric ship, thanks to the support of the Enova program to update ships sailing in the country, an institution that will contribute USD 600 thousand.
The unit will continue to sail in the Unesco World Heritage area, but the diesel engines will be replaced by two silent electric thrusters. The batteries will be charged between trips in Geiranger and at night, when the power grid is low.
The reduction in emissions is estimated to be 135 tons of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to approximately 50,000 liters of diesel. This will make the air cleaner, eliminate engine noise, and both tourists and residents will enjoy a better experience in the fjord.
In addition to the local contribution from Fjellstrand, several Norwegian suppliers will provide everything from batteries to propellers. Geiranger Fjordservice has been transporting tourists to the Norwegian fjord of the same name since 1969.
“The Enova award is a clear signal of Norway’s commitment to green maritime solutions. This support allows us to develop technology that can set a new standard for emission-free offshore operations,” said Andreas Forsnes Jahn, interim head of Maritime Transport at Enova.
