Despite broader concerns over Europe’s global competitiveness in innovation, the maritime technology sector is emerging as a notable exception, with a strong concentration of deep-tech startups based across Europe and Israel.
While venture capital activity in the region may still lag behind the US and Asia, the maritime sector continues to attract high-quality technical talent and investment, with a new list published by theDOCK highlighting 30 leading maritime-tech companies founded in Europe and Israel over the past three decades.
The list includes founder-led startups, corporate spin-offs, and acquired companies now operating within larger groups, demonstrating the growing maturity of the maritime startup ecosystem and the increasing adoption of digital technologies to address challenges in global shipping and logistics.
The UK and Germany have the most representatives on the list, with four each – Windward, Orca AI, Sedna and 90POE are mentioned as based in the UK (though the first two of these have Israeli founders), with Torqueedo, OceanScore, Panion and Fernride in Germany.
There are three companies each listed for Greece and Israel – HarborLab, ProcureShip and Deepsea Technologies from Greece, and Hoopo, WaveBL and Gigablue from Israel.
