The Thessaloniki Port Authority (ThPA) and Metka – Tekal signed the works contract for the expansion of the port infrastructure at Pier 6 of the Port of Thessaloniki.

With this, the most important modernization project in the history of the Port of Thessaloniki was initiated.

The Managing Director of ThPA, Ioannis Tsaras, stated that “with the signing of the contract, the Port of Thessaloniki enters a new era of development. The expansion of Pier 6, the largest modernization project in the port’s history, creates the conditions for Thessaloniki to consolidate its role in the Mediterranean as a strategic trade center for Southeast Europe. It is not only an important infrastructure, but a project that increases the port’s operational capacity, strengthens the regional logistics ecosystem, and generates diverse and multiplier benefits both at the local and national level.”

The initiative represents a significant strengthening of ThPA’s infrastructure and consists of the extension of Pier 6 by an additional 513 meters in length, a width of 306.5 meters, and the significant dredging of the navigation channel and the vessel maneuvering area, for the safe berthing of even ultra-large container vessels (ULCV).

The signing of the contract marks the start of the main construction phase, with an implementation period of 40 months and a total budget of 195.6 million euros.

Once the works are completed, the Port of Thessaloniki will be able to simultaneously accommodate a larger number of vessels, receive container ships of up to 24,000 TEU, and increase the total capacity of the container terminal from the current 650,000 TEU to 1,500,000 TEU.
