An explosion occurred at sea today around 16:50 for a reason yet to be determined, approximately 1 mile off the Ortahisar district. The explosion, heard and seen from many points in the district center, caused great panic, and an investigation into the explosion has been initiated.
On the other hand, last week, on September 30, 2025, an unmanned maritime vehicle of Ukrainian origin, spotted by a fishing boat off the Çarşıbaşı district, was brought to Yoroz Port and destroyed by being detonated in a controlled manner in open waters by military personnel. Such threats in the region are not experienced for the first time; on February 21, 2024, the Coast Guard was involved due to a bomb suspicion on an overturned boat off Akçaabat, and SAS commandos dived and destroyed the suspicious object with a detonator. This morning, fishermen off the Hopa district of Artvin encountered an unmanned maritime vehicle similar to the one found last week in Çarşıbaşı district of Trabzon and notified the authorities. Immediately following the development in Artvin, an explosion occurred at sea off Trabzon today.
Mines, unmanned vehicles, and explosive-laden objects used in the Russia-Ukraine war can be carried by waves and reach the region’s coasts. These objects, which are occasionally destroyed on Turkey’s Black Sea coasts, pose a serious threat not only to maritime security but also to fishing activities and civilian life.
