Port Freeport announced that it received two state-of-the-art Super Post-Panamax STS cranes. The equipment was transported fully assembled on board a heavy-lift vessel and subsequently unloaded and secured at the docks.
Following their installation and testing this fall – in the northern hemisphere – the equipment will become operational, expanding the terminal’s capacity to serve some of the world’s largest container ships.
“These cranes are a major investment in the future of Port Freeport and our community. They will act as catalysts for future growth, helping us attract new business, create more jobs, and increase operating revenue to keep Port Freeport tax-free,” said Rob Giesecke, Chairman of the Port Freeport Commission.
The units are 139.9 meters tall and weigh over 1,600 tons. They also have the capability to reach 22 containers wide and lift up to 54.5 meters above the dock.
“The addition of the new Super Post-Panamax cranes at the terminal’s expanded berths, along with the substantial completion of the Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project by the end of the year, is a defining moment for the port and a great way to start Port Freeport’s next century,” said Phyllis Saathoff, Executive Director of Port Freeport.
“As we commemorate our centennial, this achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to developing world-class infrastructure that will benefit our region for many years to come,” added the director.
