Ferry Holdings published its Statement of Performance Expectations (SPE) for /27, detailing the targets to be achieved over the coming year as the Cook Strait Ferry Replacement Programme progresses.
The connection across Cook Strait is a vital link for New Zealand, connecting people, freight and businesses between the North and South Islands. The Government is committed to delivering safe, reliable, resilient and cost-efficient ferry services, and two new ships are expected to enter service in 2029.
The SPE provides transparency on the work being undertaken to achieve that goal and allows the public, stakeholders and Parliament to see progress. Over the next year the company will focus on moving from planning and procurement to delivery.
Key priorities include finalising the detailed design of the new ferries and preparing the ground for the start of construction in 2027; continuing maritime simulations and technical assurance work to support the safe entry into service of the new vessels; continuing to carry out significant infrastructure works in Wellington and Picton to ensure both ports are ready when the new ships arrive; and coordinating programme delivery across partners, including KiwiRail, CentrePort and Port Marlborough.
Work is already underway, with the first construction activities progressing and major infrastructure works scheduled to continue through 2026 and beyond.
