In the government’s new proposal for a finance law in 2026, the pool for cheaper ferry transport is increased by 4.5 million kroner

In the government’s draft for the finance law for 2026, an extra subsidy for the scheme with cheaper ferry tickets is proposed.

The state already provides annual support to island municipalities, so that ferry tariffs for both cars and passengers can be kept down.

In the finance law for 2025, approximately 320 million kr. were allocated annually to the scheme. The so-called land road principle was introduced to ensure more equality between transport on land and at sea.

And now the pool is being strengthened with an additional 4.5 million kr., which is earmarked for VAT compensation.

Normally, the municipalities pay VAT on many expenses related to ferry operations, but this expense is now being reduced. This means that the entire amount can be used to lower ticket prices.

In the finance law for 2025, the scheme was in place, but without separate compensation for VAT expenses.

For islanders and commuters, the change means that the municipalities’ finances are strengthened – and the prospect of continued lower ferry tariffs therefore looks a bit brighter.
