Fire aboard supertanker is put out

The fire on board supertanker New Diamond has been put out, reports Reuters.

The ship was chartered by Indian Oil Corp, IOC, and was sailing out from the east coast of Sri Lanka when the fire erupted. This happened when a boiler exploded.

“The fire on the oil tanker has been doused. However we are continuing to spray water in case it reignites,” says Captain Indika Da Silva to Reuters.

The ship is carrying a cargo of two million barrels of oil, but according to a spokesperson from the Sri Lanka coast guard, there was no real risk of oil leaks.

One crew member died in the explosion, the coast guard has previously informed. The remaining 22 are safe, and one has received treatment at the hospital.
