The fire continues on board the container ship ONE Henry Hudson, which caught fire on Friday evening local time at the Yusen Container Terminal in Los Angeles. The ship has now been towed to a container yard outside the port to prevent the fire from spreading to other ships.
No one was injured and there is no danger to the ship’s safety. The fire is now under control.
According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by a fault in the electrical system.
As can be seen in the picture above, water cannons are cooling the ship’s side to limit the damage as much as possible.
The Los Angeles Fire Department, which fought the fire while the ship was still at the dock, initially estimated that 40 containers were affected by the fire, but that the number rose to at least 100 containers after an explosion occurred in one or more of the containers.
The 16-year-old container ship, which has a capacity of 8,212 TEU, had arrived in Los Angeles on November 19 from Tokyo. The ONE Henry Hudson is registered in Panama.
Some of the crew have left the ship, while others have remained on board to continue the firefighting efforts.
The firefighting is being carried out in protective suits as there are dangerous chemicals on board the ship.
