An incident on Perenco’s Becuna platform offshore Gabon has resulted in five worker fatalities with one worker still missing.
An incident involving fire occurred at the Becuna platform on Wednesday, March 20, at approximately 3:25 pm local time. The area has since then been secured, the fire has been extinguished, the site secured, and all personnel have been moved to a safe location.
Initial reports indicated that two people had sustained injuries while five were declared missing. The two injured workers have been evacuated to shore. On Thursday, the company confirmed that the incident had taken five lives and that emergency teams had been deployed to search for one missing person.
“Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, and we are focused on supporting them at this time,” Perenco stated.
Simba is a conventional shallow water oil field which has so far recovered 32.56% of its total recoverable reserves, with peak production in 2022. Production will continue until the field reaches its economic limit in 2044. The field currently accounts for approximately 4% of the country’s daily output.
