Gold broke the $4,000 per ounce (31.1 grams) barrier for the first time, as it continues to be considered a safe-haven asset in the markets, amid many uncertainties, against the backdrop of the ongoing fiscal paralysis in the US and the political crisis in France.

The precious metal reached $4,001.11 per ounce at 05:00 (Greek time), at the start of trading in Asian markets. On COMEX, the New York commodity exchange, the ounce of gold for delivery in December exceeded $4,000 already yesterday.
