Rolls-Royce has released a video showing the full potential of Remote Operating Centres (ROC), which allow captains to operate full fleets of conventional, autonomous vessels.

Powered by Rolls-Royce’s Intelligent Awareness (IA), tasks such as departure from and arrival to port can be carried out by operators on Remote Control Stations (RCS).

This means on-board captains and crew can be given ‘rest time’ as an operators watches over a vessel.

With remotely operated vessels usually remaining in autonomous mode throughout their journey, an operator can take control in the event of an emergency.

If necessary, an operator adjust a vessel’s route plan, and once direct contact is no longer required, the operator disconnects and hand back control to the on-board captain.

The fleet management station maintains monitoring capability of all vessels at all times, and collaborative decision making and data sharing with all parties is easy and accessible.

This includes sea traffic reports, water and weather data and instructions from a vessel’s port of destination.
