The Port of Newcastle Green Hydrogen Hub Projectis to receive AUS$41 million in funding. The green hydrogen project isa joint venture with Macquarie Capital and Macquarie’s Green Investment Group andis currently progressing an ARENA funded feasibility study.

The Port of Newcastle’s Green Hydrogen Hub Project has secured more funding

This funding is a vote of confidence by the FederalGovernment, which recognises the role of the port as a key player in the emerging global greenhydrogen economy,” saidCraig Carmody, CEO, Port of Newcastle.

“The significance of this funding cannot be understated. By 2025, we hope to have Phase 1 of theHydrogen Hub complete, which will benefit a range of local industry and position the Hunter Regionto be a key player in the emerging hydrogen opportunity,” Mr Carmody said.

New opportunities

MrCarmody said thisfunding also complements the recent AUS$100 million in Federal Government funding forhydrogen readiness, which will focus on preparing the land and infrastructure, while DISERfunding will provide the platform for a ready transition to Phase 1 construction.

Newcastle’s Green Hydrogen Hub Projectis being developed with aphase one minimum 40MW electrolyser that over time could increase to a capacity of over 1 GW.

The port has been working with a range of project partners to develop a comprehensive range ofuse cases for green hydrogen in the Hunter which build on the region’s strong industrial heritage.

These include, mobility, bunkering, energy production and industrial uses at the scale necessary toposition the Hunter at the centre of the emerging global green hydrogen opportunity.
