On September 17, a key milestone was reached in the GCU (Gas Combustion Unit) upgrade and modification project for the LNG transport and bunkering vessel “Hai Yang Shi You 301” at the Wenchong Shipyard wharf of Guangzhou Shipyard International Co., Ltd. (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC).
Around the LNG gas supply vaporization skid, testing work was intensively advanced. The project team from Wenchong Shipyard, the shipowner’s representative from CNOOC Energy Technology & Services, equipment supplier from the 711th Research Institute, and personnel from various gas supply units worked in close coordination. After strictly implementing the process test plan and completing all preparatory work, the combustion test was efficiently completed in just over 100 minutes, witnessing the rebirth of the GCU.
Test data showed that all performance indicators of the upgraded GCU on the “Hai Yang Shi You 301” met the original design requirements and reached internationally advanced levels. This achievement marks the perfect conclusion of the vessel’s GCU upgrade and modification project.
LNG Gas Supply GCU Combustion Test
It is understood that one of the core projects of this upgrade and modification for the “Hai Yang Shi You 301” was the performance optimization of the original GCU: by upgrading four dilution fans and increasing the air volume, along with corresponding modifications to the power supply system, the original GCU’s gas combustion rate was improved while effectively reducing the exhaust temperature, achieving a dual enhancement of environmental protection and efficiency.
The successful completion of this modification was made possible through the collaborative efforts of all parties: the shipowner, CNOOC Energy Technology & Services, provided full support to ensure the project direction aligned with actual operational needs; the 711th Research Institute, through rigorous calculation and simulation, developed a scientific and feasible technical solution; and Wenchong Shipyard ensured the effective implementation of the modifications through efficient on-site construction. Ultimately, this first-of-its-kind domestically produced GCU equipment achieved a “thorough transformation,” not only laying a solid foundation for the subsequent stable operation of the “Hai Yang Shi You 301” but also accumulating valuable experience in the field of upgrading China’s offshore engineering equipment, contributing to technological breakthroughs in the industry.
