US Genco Shipping & Trading recently announced that it has reached an agreement with the seller to acquire two modern Newcastlemax bulk carriers for $145.5 million, marking the company’s first entry into this ship type market.

It is reported that this acquisition will be financed through cash and the company’s existing revolving credit facility, with the two vessels expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026.

The two vessels are the 2020-built “Bulk Sydney” and “Bulk Santos” respectively. The former are the last two Newcastlemax vessels recently sold by Norway’s 2020 Bulkers, and the transaction price is consistent with previous ones. This acquisition further deepens Genco’s presence in the large bulk carrier sector.

Genco stated that this acquisition aligns with the company’s strategic goal of modernizing its fleet, enhancing its competitiveness in the dry bulk market by continuously improving vessel energy efficiency and optimizing the fleet age structure. Company CEO John Wobensmith said: “These two high-quality vessels will enhance our profit potential, and since the vessels do not require special surveys before 2030, we expect to achieve high vessel utilization rates in the current dry bulk market environment.”

Furthermore, Genco also confirmed the acquisition of a 2020-built 182,000-ton Imabari-type Capesize bulk carrier for $63.5 million, further strengthening its investment in the Capesize and Newcastlemax ship type markets. To date, the company’s total investment in these two ship type markets has reached $343 million. The funds primarily came from the sale of older vessels, with the recycled capital being invested into younger, more energy-efficient ships.

According to the company’s disclosure, after completing this acquisition, Genco’s fleet will increase to 45 vessels, with an average age of 12.5 years. The two newly acquired Newcastlemax vessels will become Genco’s first ships of this class, marking the company’s further expansion in the global bulk transportation market.
