The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, has officially announced the appointment of the Prefect of Livorno, Giancarlo Dionisi, as extraordinary commissioner for the Darsena Europa, a role in which he will succeed Luciano Guerrieri (now former president of the local port authority). The announcement came during a meeting with the press at the Bagni Pancaldi in Livorno, in a context marked by tensions and protests from outside, where protesters opposed to the minister’s visit were present.

During his speech, Salvini confirmed the institutional support for the project by stating: “I have spoken with Confindustria, the trade unions and with the commissioner of the Port System Authority, Davide Gariglio. With Prefect Dionisi we will proceed with the program for the construction of the Darsena Europa: the necessary 500 million are already allocated, but my commitment does not stop here.” The designation of Dionisi aims to give new impetus to one of the most ambitious and strategic projects of the Tuscan and Italian port system, conceived to relaunch the competitiveness of the port of Livorno in the container and motorways of the sea sectors.

The project involves the seaward expansion of the Livorno port, with new terminals and quays capable of accommodating the latest generation ships.

With his appointment, Giancarlo Dionisi will have the task of coordinating the work, speeding up authorization processes and managing relations between local authorities, economic operators and central institutions. His experience as Prefect of Livorno should represent an added value in terms of knowledge of the territory and mediation skills.
