The Port Authority of Gijón has been selected by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) to receive a grant of 7.17 million euros within the first call of the Port-Eolmar program, aimed at adapting port infrastructures of general interest for the deployment of offshore wind and other marine renewable energies in Spain. The funding will be allocated to the comprehensive refurbishment project of the Romualdo Alvargonzález Figaredo dock and the adaptation of high-capacity logistics areas for the industrial development of the offshore wind value chain in the port of Gijón.
The project of the port of Gijón, whose application was the second highest rated in the national call, will help reinforce the role of El Musel as one of the strategic infrastructures for the development of offshore wind in the Cantabrian arc. The action will improve the operational capacity of the north dock and provide logistics surfaces adapted to the demands of an industry that requires large areas, high load capacities, and efficient connection with the logistics and industrial chain. “With this aid, the Port Authority of Gijón advances in the strategy of traffic diversification, energy transition, and attraction of new industrial activities linked to renewable energies, and contributes to promoting the policies of the Government of the Principality of Asturias related to the renewable energy value chain industry,” explained the president of Gijón, Nieves Roqueñí.
The Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco), has allocated 212 million euros to six ports of the state network of general interest to adapt their infrastructures and logistics capacities for the future deployment of offshore wind and other marine renewable energies in Spain. The six beneficiary port authorities, Gijón, Las Palmas, Castellón, Tarragona, A Coruña, and Ferrol San Cibrao, now have a deadline to submit objections or accept the preliminary proposal for the allocation of aid.
