The world’s leading maritime groups are calling on governments to adopt the IMO’s Net Zero Framework this October. Industry leaders say only a unified global approach can drive real progress in cutting emissions and ensuring a fair transition for the maritime workforce.
The global shipping industry is making a collective push for governments to adopt the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Net Zero Framework, a proposal that would commit the sector to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions by or close to 2050.
In a joint statement ahead of next week’s Extraordinary Session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee, leading maritime organizations reaffirmed their “strong support for adoption by the world’s governments at the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the Net-Zero Framework.” The session, to be held from October 14 to 17, is expected to determine whether the global plan will move forward.
The framework, which has been years in the making, seeks to put in place a worldwide regulatory package that will set enforceable emissions goals, create incentives for green fuel investment, and ensure a just transition for workers in the maritime sector. Industry groups say it is a critical moment for governments to unite behind a single global strategy rather than allow a mix of regional rules that could drive up costs and slow progress.
“Only global rules will decarbonise a global industry,” the statement read. “Without the Framework, shipping would risk a growing patchwork of unilateral regulations, increasing costs without effectively contributing to decarbonisation.”
The appeal is backed by major international organizations including the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), the Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA), the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), the International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), the World Shipping Council (WSC), and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).
Together, these groups represent shipowners, ports, and maritime workers responsible for moving 90 percent of the world’s traded goods. They say the IMO’s Net Zero Framework would help provide certainty to investors and a level playing field for all shipping nations.
“The maritime transport sector, which moves 90% of global trade, is ready to play its important part in delivering a sustainable future,” the statement concluded.
If adopted, the IMO’s framework could mark one of the most significant global agreements yet toward cutting emissions in one of the world’s most critical industries.
