The Port of Thessaloniki (ThPA SA) received and put into operation eight new hybrid diesel-electric gantry cranes, thus renewing the mechanical equipment of the Container Terminal, in parallel with the progress of the pier 6 expansion project.
The CEO of ThPA SA, Ioannis Tsaras, stated that “the acquisition of the eight new gantry cranes constitutes a further decisive step in preparing the Port of Thessaloniki for its next phase of growth and represents a new investment with the strategic objective of continuously modernizing its infrastructure and operations. We are modernizing our mechanical equipment, making it more efficient and sustainable to improve the productivity of the container terminal in an environment of growing demand for faster, more reliable and environmentally friendly port services. Through the constant implementation of investments in infrastructure, equipment and technology, ThPA SA strengthens the position of Thessaloniki as a modern trade and logistics hub for Southeastern Europe.”
The acquisition of new equipment is part of ThPA SA’s broader investment program for the continuous modernization and upgrading of the Port of Thessaloniki, with the aim of increasing efficiency, improving the quality of cargo handling service and enhancing its competitiveness. Since 2018, ThPA SA has already modernized its mechanical equipment through the acquisition of 12 gantry cranes, a new mobile harbor crane and two new special-design STS New Panamax units, capable of serving mainline vessels with a capacity exceeding 10,000 TEU.
The new gantry cranes, manufactured in Europe and with hybrid technology, achieve greater energy efficiency, an 18% reduction in fuel consumption and lower polluting emissions.
The integration of the new machinery into the port’s fleet of gantry cranes will modernize the container transport and stacking equipment and substantially improve the terminal’s storage capacity. The new gantry cranes allow more efficient use of available space, thanks to their ability to stack containers at different heights.
