Inmarsat’s fully managed multi-network connectivity service is facilitating fleetwide digital transformation for a growing cohort of Greek ship owners and managers. As the world’s leading ship owning nation, Greece is pivotal to the pace of maritime digitalisation. Local engagement with predictive analytics, voyage optimisation tools, real-time emissions monitoring, and internet access for crew offers one benchmark for shipping at global scale. While IoT-based decision-making tools can enhance operational safety and efficiency, however – and facilitate straightforward regulatory compliance – they also increase the demands on fleet connectivity. Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, is supporting the Greek shipping industry’s digital transformation through its fully managed multi-network service, NexusWave. Rather than switching between networks, NexusWave intelligently bonds them – integrating low Earth orbit capacity with Global Xpress Ka-band, LTE, and resilient L-band – in a single, convenient solution provided by a trusted maritime connectivity partner. In addition to download speeds of up to 340 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 80 Mbps – as verified in sea trials – Inmarsat’s innovative network-bonding approach delivers global coverage and availability exceeding 99.9%. Wherever the vessel is operating, whether in a busy shipping corridor or a congested port, NexusWave provides a seamless and consistent connection. As high-speed onboard internet continues to transition from luxury to basic requirement, the solution also enables ship operators to offer their personnel unlimited data, supporting crew welfare and employee retention in an intensely competitive market. This powerful combination of capabilities means NexusWave has found a ready audience among the Greek owners and managers who prioritise assured outcomes and convenience over purely speed-oriented solutions. Inmarsat’s long-term partner Pulsar has committed to rollout NexusWave across more than 300 vessels operated by their customer base. Already ahead of target, Pulsar provides strong local expertise creating a trusted bridge between Inmarsat’s global capabilities and Pulsar’s tailored and well-established customer relationships. Early adopters include shipping services provider Spring Marine Management, Roswell Tankers Corp. and Newport SA. According to Konstantinos Zacharias, Spring Marine’s ICT Officer, “connectivity plays a vital role in streamlining processes and meeting the diverse needs of stakeholders” in modern shipping. “NexusWave stands out as a fully managed service that seamlessly integrates the strengths of multiple networks, eliminating administrative burdens, helping control costs, and delivering consistent quality,” he said, adding that this unified approach “enhances efficiency and reliability across the board”. Antonis Alogakos, Roswell Tankers’ IT Officer, said: “The increasing complexity of connectivity demands in modern maritime operations require multi-orbit networks that work in harmony, such as Inmarsat’s NexusWave – whose orchestration of various networks provides the speed, reliability, and global coverage that ship owners, managers, and operators increasingly rely on.” For all the opportunities that maritime digitalisation presents, it also raises cyber-security concerns by increasing the number of shipboard attack surfaces. NexusWave addresses this issue through its secure-by-design infrastructure, which delivers four layers of real-time protection against progressively more sophisticated cyber-attacks and is trusted by governments and enterprises worldwide.

“With vessels becoming more connected, the risk of costly cyber-attacks grows significantly, making network security a top priority,” commented Theofano Somaripa, CIO, Newport. NexusWave’s “enterprise-grade security” – including its “encrypted data, segregated networks, and the option to include advanced value-added security services” – was a key factor in Newport’s decision to implement the solution, Somaripa explained. Inmarsat NexusWave combines the speeds, availability, and coverage of multiple networks with the consistency, reliability, and convenience of a single solution – and delivers it in a package that also includes unlimited data and secure-by-design infrastructure. In doing so, the fully managed service is helping a growing cohort of Greek ship owners and managers to embrace maritime digitalisation and reap the efficiency, safety, and crew welfare rewards it brings.
