Comrade Shen Wensun, a member of the Communist Party of China, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, an expert in the field of ship design and construction, and the former chief designer and former deputy chief engineer of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd., passed away due to ineffective medical treatment on November 17, 2025, in Dalian, Liaoning, at the age of 95.
Shen Wensun, male, Han ethnicity, native of Haiyan, Zhejiang, was born in May 1930. He began working at Dalian Shipyard in September 1953. He previously served as an engineer at Dalian Shipyard, an engineer and deputy section chief of the technical department at Chongqing Shipyard, and as deputy director of the ship research institute, deputy chief engineer, and chief designer at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd. He joined the Communist Party of China in July 1985. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1997.
Shen Wensun devoted his life to ship design and development work and was an expert with widespread influence in China’s shipbuilding industry. As a scientific researcher who always worked on the front lines of China’s shipbuilding enterprises, he broke through the technical bottlenecks in the design and manufacturing of large ships in China. The multiple types of ships he presided over reached international advanced levels, filling domestic gaps; he created several “Chinese famous brands,” broke the “zero” record for 300,000-ton ultra-large crude carriers, and made outstanding contributions to the export of China’s large ships and the development of shipbuilding technology. He once received one first prize and three second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and one Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award. He enjoyed the State Council’s special government allowance.
