The intervention made possible by the rapid reporting and response network developed within the LIFE ELIFE project

Yesterday morning, a Mediterranean devil ray (Mobula mobular) was rescued and returned to the open sea along the coasts of the island of Procida, thanks to active collaboration between citizens, military personnel of the Procida Coast Guard, and researchers from the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station. The intervention was made possible by the rapid reporting and response network developed within the LIFE ELIFE project, co-financed by the European Union, which once again allowed an important conservation result to be achieved.

Around 8 a.m., some citizens reported the presence of a mobula in distress along the shoreline of a beach on the island. The military personnel of the Procida Coast Guard, promptly alerted, in turn contacted the researchers of the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station. Thanks to a rapid and synergistic action, it was possible to accompany the animal out of the shallow waters, allowing it to return to the open sea on its own.
