HD Hyundai and A.P. Moller – Maersk have just unveiled an exciting Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that aims to push the boundaries of maritime decarbonization and enhance integrated logistics services. This agreement was inked at HD Hyundai’s Global R&D Center in Seongnam, South Korea, with key figures like Executive Vice Chairman Chung Kisun and Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla present to witness the moment.
This partnership is a natural progression for these two industry leaders, who have been collaborating as 2021. Notably, HD Hyundai has already delivered 19 methanol-powered container ships for Maersk and made headlines last year by launching the world’s first ultra-large container ship powered by methanol.
The collaboration will kick off with a six-month trial focusing on Avikus’ HiNAS navigation technology alongside HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s OCEANWISE route optimization system aboard a Maersk vessel. The goal? to measure fuel efficiency improvements and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions through smarter navigation practices.
But that’s not all! They’re also diving into retrofitting existing ships to boost decarbonization efforts—think enhancing engine performance, maximizing container space, and implementing dual-fuel propulsion systems. Plus, they’ll be investigating Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems as part of their joint research initiatives.
On the logistics side of things, HD Hyundai plans to leverage Maersk’s vast East-West network along with it’s robust logistics capabilities—this includes air freight options, land transport solutions, and warehousing facilities. Initially focusing on HD Hyundai xitesolution and Marine Solution services will set the stage for broader integration across other affiliates down the line.Chung Kisun expressed enthusiasm about this partnership: “working together with Maersk showcases how innovation can reshape global logistics by merging cutting-edge shipping technologies with comprehensive logistical frameworks.”
Meanwhile, Robert Maersk Uggla emphasized their long-standing relationship: “Decades of collaboration built on trust have led us here today. this MOU is not just a document; it symbolizes our commitment to deeper cooperation moving forward.”
