Life at sea is accompanied by exposure to intense noises (operation of machinery, pumps, fans, loading and unloading, and maintenance work), especially for those working in the ship’s engine room.
However, prolonged or repeated exposure to high noise levels (above 85 dB) can lead to noise-induced hearing loss in the long term. In this case, the ability to perceive high frequencies is initially reduced, something that is not easily detected during routine medical examinations.
