HMM to utilise AI-powered video safety monitoring system

Korean shipping company HMM is set to introduce an AI-powered video analysis system for onboard safety management, to be piloted on a 24,000 TEI container ship next month ahead of a potential fleetwide roll-out.

The ‘Deep Eyes’ safety monitoring system is capable of automatically recognising abnormal situations and issuing warnings to crew members of potential danger, based on data from installed CCTV cameras equipped with AI video analysis functionality.

If an unexpected event such as fire, smoke, or a crew member in distress is detected, a notification or warning is immediately delivered to the relevant person in charge. The system utilises a network of cameras installed in 15 separate vessel locations, including the engine room and on deck.

HMM says that data collected by the system will also be actively analysed to identify worker behaviour patterns and standardise work safety processes in the future.

The Deep Eyes system was developed by Globe AI, a company founded by professors at Korea’s Chung-Ang University.
