Hormuz, Iran bans unauthorized alternative routes

The Iranian navy has issued a warning against the use of new routes in the Strait of Hormuz, specifying that the only authorized corridors are those established by Tehran. Vessels navigating outside these routes will be subject to coercive measures.

Although Iran has not specified which route is contested nor who defined it, Oman recently announced on X the opening of a maritime corridor in coordination with the IMO (International Maritime Organization). According to the CEO of Vespucci Maritime, Lars Jensen, it is highly likely that the Iranian warning refers precisely to this initiative.

At present, traffic flows indicate that ships are not using the new Omani corridor: transits are concentrated either close to the Omani coast or further north, near the Iranian coast.

Meanwhile, the exodus from the Persian Gulf continues, with outbound traffic volume consistently exceeding inbound traffic.

Among the container ships that have visibly left the area are the “Wan Hai 316” (2,650 TEU), the “Zaynar 2” (2,700 TEU), the “Wan Hai A07” (13,100 TEU), and the “Ciccio” (2,250 TEU).
