On June 18, CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., in conjunction with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd., successfully signed contracts with three domestic and international shipowners, securing orders for 13 container ships of 5,000 TEU and above, including three 5,300 TEU container ships, four 6,200 TEU container ships, and six 6,400 TEU container ships.
The 5,300 TEU vessel is a benchmark product of the “Honghu” series of medium-sized container ships independently developed by Huangpu Wenchong. The ship has an overall length of 235 meters, a beam of 37.5 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of approximately 71,500 tons. Through multiple rounds of hull line optimization, integrated design of high-efficiency propeller and rudder with energy-saving devices, and meticulous overall layout planning, the vessel exhibits excellent container utilization and fuel economy.
According to shipbrokers and market sources, the three 5,300 TEU vessels were ordered by Jiangsu Ocean Shipping.
Clarksons data shows that Jiangsu Ocean Shipping has already ordered four 3,000 TEU newbuilds at Jiangsu Suhao Chuangke Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and another six 1,900 TEU vessels are under construction at Huangpu Wenchong.
Furthermore, the company is also advancing newbuilding plans for Ultramax and Kamsarmax bulk carriers. Clarksons data indicates that, including vessels under construction, Jiangsu Ocean Shipping’s fleet totals approximately 53 ships.
The 6,200 TEU container ship was designed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute, while the 6,400 TEU container ship was developed by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation 708 Research Institute. Both vessel types meet the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 standards. Through refined hull optimization, they feature outstanding advantages of low fuel consumption and low carbon emissions, precisely matching the operational requirements of various shipping routes.
In another transaction, Global Ship Lease is reported to have placed an order for four 6,200 TEU container ships. Shipbrokers noted that these vessels are part of the 10-ship newbuilding order announced by this US-listed shipowner earlier this month. At that time, the company stated it had signed contracts for a series of medium-sized, ultra-high reefer plug capacity, wide-beam, latest-generation container ships, with a total value of approximately $917 million, but did not disclose the shipyard or specific vessel dimensions. This Greek shipowner currently operates a fleet of 71 vessels, with an average age of 18.2 years on a TEU-weighted basis.
In other news, Germany’s Peter Döhle is reported to have returned to place orders for six 6,400 TEU container ships. The company has been one of the most active non-operating owners in the newbuilding market in recent years.
Clarksons data shows that Peter Döhle currently has orders for three 14,170 TEU newbuilds at Hudong-Zhonghua, four 2,900 TEU vessels at Huangpu Wenchong, and two 3,100 TEU vessels at Chengxi Shipyard. Its fleet spans the container and bulk carrier sectors, totaling approximately 70 ships.
As of now, Huangpu Wenchong’s cumulative orders for medium-sized container ships of 5,000 TEU and above have reached 39 vessels, establishing a significant scale advantage in the global medium-sized container ship segment.
