Published the annual report produced by the International Maritime Organization
During 2025, 171 cases of piracy and armed robbery against ships were recorded worldwide, an increase of 17% compared to the 146 cases in 2024 and the 150 in 2023. This is attested by the latest annual report on acts of maritime piracy produced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The most affected area was once again the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, where 122 incidents occurred (+34%), equal to over 70% of the global total. In that specific region, approximately 89% of attacks occurred against ships underway.
In the area, risks for maritime personnel remain high, with 27 crew members having been kidnapped or taken hostage. Next is the West Africa region with 21 incidents (+24%), the Indian Ocean region with ten incidents (-47%), and the South China Sea area with six episodes (-40%).
Finally, the number of armed robberies and acts of piracy against ships in the South America and Caribbean regions also increased: five were recorded last year, compared to the only two episodes reported in 2024.
