Indian Ship Register launches drift trajectory prediction service

Must read

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) announced the launch of its Ship Drift Trajectory Prediction Service; an advanced tool designed to strengthen maritime risk management and improve emergency response planning for distressed ships.

Developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), this state-of-the-art software program predicts the drift trajectories of vessels that have lost propulsion. The service allows maritime authorities and emergency response teams to plan and execute search and rescue operations with greater precision and speed.

The predictive capability is invaluable for preventing groundings, avoiding collisions with maritime infrastructure or coastal facilities, and redirecting nearby vessels to ensure the safety of navigation.

“We are pleased to present this maritime safety service to the shipping community. As maritime traffic and offshore platform development continue to grow, accurate drift trajectory prediction becomes essential to safeguard lives, property, and infrastructure. This new service enables response teams to forecast vessel drift based on real-time environmental conditions,” said PK Mishra, director general of IRS.

The intuitive user interface allows for seamless extraction of simulation results, while the built-in post-processing function generates simulation videos for better visualization and analysis of vessel drift trajectories.

This initiative underscores the IRS’s commitment to delivering innovative technology-based services that enhance maritime safety, support effective emergency preparedness, and strengthen resilience across the global shipping ecosystem.
