Acta Marine in The Netherlands has signed a contract for the construction of two methanol /HVO-powered construction service operation vessels (CSOVs) at Turkish shipyard Tersan

The contract includes options for two more vessels for delivery at a later date.

The vessels are primarily aimed at the offshore wind construction market and are new design from Ulstein, the SX-216 TWIN-X Stern.

Acta Marine managing director Rob Boer said, “Acta Marine is growing along with the offshore wind construction market. The SX-216 design with TWIN-X stern, integrated walk-to-work gangway system, 3-D crane and hotel style accommodation represents a next step in responding to market needs.

“A first in offshore wind, the vessels will be dual fuel-capable, operating on methanol and /HVO, enabling a strong carbon footprint reduction in the near future in combination with a battery power system.”

Acta Marine said the vessels were designed with “in-field agility, high operability and workability, safe transfer of people and cargo and optimized on-board logistics” in mind, “along with high productivity and high levels of comfort on board.”

The company said it sees methanol as one of the most viable alternatives to minimize the ships’ carbon footprint.

Acta Marine General Manager Simon Anink said, “Dual fuel methanol driven propulsion scores high in terms of technology readiness and the vessels are ready for a single-fuel, methanol upgrade at a later date. This will allow early application of significant CO2 reduction measures now, while still allowing net-zero operations over the life of the ship.”

The CSOVs will be 89 m in length with a breadth of 19 m and accommodation for up to 135 people in 85 cabins. They will have a DP2 dynamic positioning system.

The vessels will be equipped with an SMST motion-compensated gangway mounted on an integrated tower with height adjustment and a /cargo lift capability. They will also have an SMST 3D-motion-compensated crane with 6-tonne lifting capacity.

The cargo area is 500 m2 indoors, and 500 m2 outdoors. The vessel will provide for walk-to-work transfer of personnel and cargo in significant wave heights of up to 3.0 m.

Acta Marine’s new CSOVs will undertake assignments during the commissioning and construction of offshore windfarms and undertake maintenance tasks on completed windfarms. The first two vessels are scheduled for delivery in Q2 and Q3 2024.
