Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Kanadevia and Yanmar Power Solutions exceed the goals of the national green innovation project
Tokyo – Japan has reached a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization, achieving a 98% reduction in methane emissions during on-board tests on LNG-fueled ships as part of the Methane Slip Reduction Project.
The program is part of the Green Innovation Fund Project – Development of Next-Generation Vessels, led by the Nedo (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) organization.
The companies Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (Mol), Kanadevia and Yanmar Power Solutions are collaborating on the development of technologies to reduce methane slip by combining methane oxidation catalysts and engine improvements.
The tests, which began in May 2025 on the route between Japan and Australia on board the LNG bulk carrier Reimei, exceeded the initial target of 70% reduction, reaching 98% at 75% of the operational load.
According to Mol, the tests will continue until the end of fiscal year 2026 to evaluate the durability of the system and catalysts, with the aim of starting the commercial application phase from 2027.
