Japan’s Kasuga adds to ultramax orders in China New Dayang Shipbuilding

Japanese owner Kasuga Kaiun has returned to Chinese builder New Dayang to order its third ultramax bulk carrier newbuild at the shipbuilding arm of state-run machinery manufacturer Sumec Group.

The deal worth about $34m follows New Dayang’s breakthrough into the Japanese market when the same owner signed up for a pair of 64,100 dwt vessels for delivery in the second half of 2026.

Kasuga is listed with 12 owned ships, predominantly bulkers. The latest order will see the company’s newbuilds in the dry segment lifted to five ships, delivering in the next two years.

Meanwhile, New Dayang in Jiangsu has secured multiple orders for its flagship Crown 63 Plus ultramax design this year, including from domestic leasing companies and various international shipowners. Hong Kong-based Wah Kwong recently signed up for a pair of newbuildings after previously taking delivery of four ultramaxes from the same yard.
